Introduction
Hello! I am a faculty member at SUNY Empire State College. I work at the Center for Distance Learning as an area coordinator. For the past two years, I have served as a faculty associate at the College's Center for Mentoring and Learning. From July 2015-September 2016, I will be on sabbatical.
I have served in a number of roles over my over 30 years with the college, but mentoring has been at the core. I am a facilitator of learning. My primary interest is to create an environment, including helping with logistics, that is the best posssible environment for learning. I know learning can happen anywhere. At Empire State College, I have worked with many learners to help credential learning that has happened outside the "academy." I strive to create courses within the academy that build bridges between what one knows and what one needs to know.
My primary area is mathematics and, with the Center for Distance Learning, I have collaborated with others to create online courses that encourage lifelong learning. Learners do this through journaling about their learning to make the connections that are so important.
During my sabbatical, I plan to investigate learning that is happening outside the traditional college courses. For example, there are now certificate progams available through Udacity and Coursera. How can those learning opportunities be enriched? Can face-to-face communities be formed (perhaps through Meetup.com) to help learners through these online activities? What are the benefits of these cohorts?
I am eager to engage with other learners throughout the coming year.
