Creating, Publishing and Sharing a Journal

revised for secret url option

Your Options

Ready to start your journal?  As you can see, there are written directions on this page.  Start with creating the journal, then go to the section on publishing your journal.

But, you can also use videos!  Here is a link to a number of videos about using Mahara. Note, though, that these are for an older version of Mahara.

The specific video on journals for the 2017 version of Mahara is given below.

How to Create a Journal

Follow the screen shots below to see how to create a journal.

Step 1: Exit from this course (You can click on Home tab at the top of your page) and return to the initial Moodle page (Image 1.)

Step 2: Click on the "ESC Mahara ePortfolio" button on the right side of the screen (shown in Image 1), which will take you to the Mahara dashboard, as shown in Image 2.

Step 3: Click on the content tab from the menu icon in the upper right side of the page.  Then, choose "Journals "." (Image 3)

Step 4: Click on "Create Journal." Give it a name, such as "Betty Hurley's Journal," using your name.  Press "Create Journal" at the bottom. (Image 4)

Step 5: You will be taken back to the Journals page and should see your new journal listed.  Click on "New Entry" and add an introduction of yourself. Save the entry. You should now see that entry listed.

You now have your journal!  But,only you can see it so far. In the next set of instructions, you'll learn how to publish your journal.

Publishing Your Journal

Now that you have your journal, you need to publish it. Follow these steps.

Step 1: Click on the Portfolio tab from the menu bar at the top right hand corner.  Then,  click on "Create Page." You should then see a page similar to Image 6.

Step 2: Title your page and save. You will then be brought to this page (Image 7) and will automatically be in edit mode.

Step 3: Click on the Journal tab. You should see Image 8. Then, click and hold the first icon (full journal) and drag and drop it down to your page. You will get a configure box.  Select your journal. One option is how many entries to show on the page. I recommend 2 entries per page. (Other entries will be viewable by clicking on an arrow- this will prevent your page from getting too long.) Save.

Step 4: You can click on "Share Page" if you wish, but I recommend creating a secret url to share, if you are submitting as an assignment for class.  (Note: if for class, you ned to create a secret url)  To do this, first click "Done" at the bottom.  This will bring you back to the daskboard.  Then, click on portfolio and then "shared by me". Clcik on the "secret url" button, get a secret url and copy this link.  Share this link with whomever you want to see your page.

After you have published your page, you can return to this page to add new entries to your journal.  You can also add to your journal through the content area.

You'll be asked to submit this new page for review as an assignment in Module 1.

THIS IS A GREAT DEAL OF INFORMATION BUT I KNOW IT WILL HELP ME DURING CLASSES.

When I log into Mahara from moodle.esc.edu, I don't see the same page as Betty in her video above, "Video on Creating and Publishing a Journal." I'm missing the menu bar above the yellow Empire State College box on the left (see attached screen shot). The referenced Dashboard, Content, Portfolio, and Groups in the video either do not display (I am using an updated version of Chrome on an iMac) or an perhaps an update of Mahara removed these "tabs."

Please provide instructions on how to set up the Mahara landing page so that it looks like (or at least presents that menu items) that are in Betty's video above.

Thanks.

I am having the same issues as Brian.  I do not see the bar across the top where I need to click content.  Any advice on how we can navigate or work around this issue?

Thanks,

Sara
