ESC Area of Study Guidelines

Empire State College Area of Study Guidelines explain the types of learning expected for broad areas of study and specific concentrations within those areas.  They help you decide what to include in your degree.

Guidelines are intentionally broad; you do not have to have a direct, one-to-one correspondence between each guideline statement and each course in your degree. You can address guidelines through prior learning assessment, or by explaining how multiple sources of learning provide certain knowledge.

Use the guidelines when you write your rationale essay, to explain how you've gained or intend to gain the knowledge they identify.

SUNY General Learning Req's

The State University of New York requires all students to include learning in seven of ten general education areas in their degrees. The college offers multiple courses and studies for each requirement, so you can choose to study in an area that's interesting to you.  You can also bring general education learning into your degree through prior learning assessment.
